Stevens Takes the Block Brings Our School Community Together

 

Stevens Takes the Block brought the heart of our school into the neighborhood! Families joined us for a free morning of activities, school essentials and time together, and it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and new ones, too.

The event grew from Ms. Maxwell’s vision to bring Stevens and community resources closer to families who live farther from campus, including many of our Spanish speaking families. A huge thank you to Cedar House Family Dentistry for welcoming us into their space. It was the perfect place for families to gather, connect and enjoy the event together.

​

Thank you to the Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA, for providing students with school supplies and bags. Families found uniforms through a giveaway and swap made possible by donations from community members and the Oak Forest Foster Closet. Shoes from the Soul joined us with its mission to help school aged children access new and gently worn shoes.

​

Bilingual author Najeda Cerda shared her new children’s book through art activities and interactive poetry in English and Spanish. Tierra Encantada Garden Oaks connected with families, while kids enjoyed basketball games from Bricolin Moonwalk, Kona Ice snow cones and face painting by former Stevens student Sofia Alcorta. MonInk brought its creative custom pens. Stevens PTCO grilled free hot dogs and served cold juice and water, La Viva Tex Mex generously provided chips and salsa and Shipley's on Ella Blvd shared delicious donuts.

Several students also went home with bikes won in our event raffle, thanks to a generous donation from Ilya Montanalbo and Coach Richard Lamb of the NICA Green Dragons Woodlands Composite Mountain Bike Team.

 

​A special thank you to our Stevens PTCO volunteers and parent volunteers who gave their time to set up, welcome families, serve food and keep everything going. We truly could not have done it without you. Thank you also to our community partners and every family who joined us, even in the heat!

Thank you for showing up for Stevens and for one another. We are one community, whether we live near campus or farther away, and this is how great schools grow. Somos Stevens! 💙
